Update Your Sign Timers: Daylight Savings Ends November 5th

Sunset Shifts on November 5th

Ensure Your Signs Shine On Time

As daylight savings time comes to an end this Sunday, November 5th, many commercial business owners look at the change to their schedules, but forget about their signage. You may have experienced this scenario before: the sun sets, but your sign remains unlit. The street is bathed in twilight, yet your business sign is eerily dark. Before you panic and think something is wrong with your sign's lighting, remember the time change could be the culprit. Adjusting to the end of daylight savings is crucial not only for our internal clocks but also for the timers on our commercial signs.

Setting Signage Timers with The Time Change

With daylight savings time ending, it's essential to ensure that your signage timer is set correctly. On Sunday we "fall back" an hour, and this can affect when your sign lights up. Failing to adjust the timer can result in your sign turning on too late or too early, neither of which is ideal for attracting potential customers. So, as we get ready for the time change, take a moment to reset your timers. Your sign should be a beacon for your business, shining bright when needed the most.

Sundown vs. Actual Darkness: Know the Difference

One common misconception is that signs should light up exactly at sundown. However, there's a crucial difference between official sundown and when the area around your sign loses daylight. For instance, New York City and Detroit, though in the same time zone, experience sundown at slightly different times due to their geographical locations within the zone. While Detroit might still be basking in the day's last light, NYC could be starting to dim. It's vital to set your timer based on when it begins to get dark in your specific area, ensuring your sign is illuminated effectively.

Testing Your Timer Scenarios

Once you've set your timers, it's a good idea to test them out. Over a few days, observe when your sign lights up. Does it turn on when the surroundings start to get dark? Or is there still too much daylight? Adjust as needed. Remember, the goal is to have your sign visible and clear to those passing by, especially during peak business hours. Regularly testing and adjusting your timer ensures you hit that sweet spot between daylight and darkness.
