Jeff Bezos Opens Tuition-Free Preschools

A new chain of tuition-free preschools, founded by billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is opening. The Bezos Academy will launch 10 preschools in various locations, ensuring that parents pay nothing for their children to attend.

The Impact of Montessori Education

Allison Leader, a spokesperson for Bezos Academy, explained, “He credits having a Montessori preschool education for really setting him and his family up for success. And when he was determining what avenues that he wanted to use to spend his money, this was right at the top of his list.”

Eligibility for Free Preschool Education

Kanetria Doolin, director of the Bezos Academy in North Dallas, highlighted the inclusive nature of the initiative, saying, “We are tuition-free. So, a family that makes under $120,000 per year could qualify to attend here.” The North Dallas campus, located on the Presbyterian Village North senior living community, boasts four classrooms and can accommodate 80 children, having opened just last November.

Enrollment Process and Deadlines

Enrollment operates on a lottery basis, but the chances are much better than winning the Powerball. The Bezos Academy serves children aged three to five, with classes held five days a week.

Leader emphasized the mission behind Bezos Academy: “We know that about 50-percent of 3 to 5-year-old kids in the U.S. are not enrolled in preschool. And a big reason for that is accessibility and affordability. So, there’s nothing near me and things that are near me I cannot afford to participate in and that’s really what we are trying to solve for.”

Real Stories from Grateful Parents

For parents like Lavoris McGruder, the Academy has been a game-changer. McGruder and her husband previously paid $400 a month for daycare until discovering Bezos Academy. She shared, “And then when they said it was tuition-free, me and my husband were like ‘Hey! We will take it.’” The positive impact on their 4-year-old son has been noticeable, with McGruder noting his increased independence and confidence.

Bezos Academy’s commitment is long-term, with the schools signing 10-year leases with community partners. This stability aligns with a recent study from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin, which reported that the lack of affordable childcare is costing the Texas economy over $11 billion per year. The availability of accessible, cost-free preschool education is a crucial step in alleviating this burden.
